These two modalities are often grouped together because they are from the same origin and are very similar in technique. The goal of each is to unblock stagnations along the energy pathways (also called meridians) that run throughout the body. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that the organs of the body can be accessed by various points along these pathways. When there is a blockage of energy in an organ or pathway, it causes disease in that related organ. Manipulating the corresponding acupoints releases the stagnation of energy, thereby bringing that organ back into a state of balance and health.
Acupressure is always included in a Shiatsu treatment; however it can be used without some of the other aspects of a typical Shiatsu treatment. A traditional Shiatsu treatment will involve stretching and joint mobilization in addition to acupressure.
