Reflexology is based on the same ancient Oriental theory as acupressure and Shiatsu. The basic theory is that by manipulating certain points on the feet and hands, the practitioner is able to affect the functionality of internal organs or areas of pain that are connected to these points via the peripheral nervous system and/or energy meridians. The practitioner assesses the imbalances in the body by palpating the foot for “gritty” areas that indicate a dysfunction. These areas are sometimes tender or sensitive. The congestion is cleared out through manipulation of these areas to restore function and balanced energy throughout the body.
