Deep Tissue
Deep tissue is exactly what it sounds like. The practitioner's goal is to access the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Whereas Swedish massage is more surface oriented - promoting circulation - deep tissue works to restore function and neuromuscular balance to the muscles, joints and fascia (the continuous web-like tissue that connects skin, muscles, organs, bones and vessels; and is responsible for the body's structural integrity).
Deep tissue is implemented for many reasons and has many different outcomes, depending on the goal of the client. Typical benefits of deep tissue work can include: breaking up muscle adhesions (knots), restoring range of motion to particular joints, assisting the body in structural alignment and neuromuscular health.
